In-person: Deaf Outdoors: An Introduction to Inclusion a 2.5 hour workshop. This workshop will meet in person on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at 3:30–6:00 PM EST. 

Workshop Overview:
This in-person workshop is designed to introduce participants to Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL), and inclusive practices in outdoor settings. It is ideal for individuals working or volunteering in outdoor education, recreation, or conservation who want to create more accessible and welcoming experiences for Deaf and hard of hearing communities.

The in-person workshop is led by native Deaf signers with experience in the outdoor field, ensuring the learning experience is engaging, accessible, and relevant. This one-day session is a condensed version of our full 4 week long ASL Course, designed to fit a variety of schedules while still offering meaningful and practical insights.

What’s Included:

During the 2.5-hour session, participants will:

  • Learn the basics of ASL, including key vocabulary and phrases useful in outdoor and group settings

  • Gain an understanding of Deaf culture and communication preferences

  • Explore how to work effectively with interpreters in outdoor programs

  • Develop strategies for inclusive communication and safety in nature-based environments

  • Engage in interactive activities and discussions led by a native Deaf outdoor professional
