Wilderness Medicine Part 3: Wilderness Medicine Awareness for Interpreters- 0.2 CEUs Offered

This session introduces interpreters to core wilderness medicine concepts, helping them understand how medical assessments and decision-making unfold in the field. Participants will learn to interpret effectively during emergencies or first aid scenarios while maintaining professional boundaries and personal safety.

The workshop integrates components of the Wilderness First Aid (WFA) curriculum—such as the Patient Assessment System and common medical scenarios—but reframes them for interpreters. Emphasis is on understanding medical priorities and procedures, not performing treatment, so interpreters can accurately convey information in high-stress situations.

Through guided discussions and simulated scenarios, participants will explore real-world examples, including heat exhaustion, sprains, and allergic reactions. The session also addresses emotional and psychological safety, helping interpreters manage stress and maintain focus during critical incidents.

Vancro Integrated Interpreting Services (VIIS) is an approved RID CMP sponsor for Continuing Education Activities. This workshop is offered for .2 CEUs in the Professional Studies area at the “extensive” Content Knowledge level. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance. The target audience for this activity is: interpreters who are interested in taking assignments that will take them outside.
