CorpsTHAT got to spend a week with Rocky Mountain Deaf School’s (RMDS) The Great Outdoors summer camp for high schoolers. A three week summer camp program outside of Denver, Colorado from June 6th to 21st. RMDS asked CorpsTHAT to collaborate with their summer camp for a week, and CorpsTHAT has been planning fun activities since early Spring.
The founders of CorpsTHAT, Sachiko Flores and Emma Bixler lead one week of outdoor careers highlights at The Great Outdoors camp on June 11th to 14th. CorpsTHAT facilitated group activities, joining campers on field trips to local parks and outdoor spaces. They invited Deaf Outdoors professionals from the community to come present and share their experience of working in the outdoors.
CorpsTHAT learned more about how the campers are connected to the outdoors and what their experiences and understanding of the outdoors and environment are. CorpsTHAT believes it is important to expose young Deaf people to the opportunities in the outdoors and they conclude that it is important to instill a love and curiosity for the environment at a young age. They value the Deaf community and want to give back to Deaf youth and Deaf Schools so they can strengthen the community and opportunities for other Deaf people.
